The Harms of Miserliness and Jealousy
Miserliness and jealousy block the progress of science and the spread of blessings because the one who is tainted by these traits strives to hold others back. Instead, one should use their talent and endeavor to make progress in their path. Those who do not are, indeed, an obstruction to progress, and they block the development of society. They are unaware that this advancement is, in fact, advantageous to society. Plus, because they are individuals of the same society, this regression and deprivation of society result in a loss for themselves as well. Others may have failed to mention this fact about misers and jealous people; we now say that a miser and a jealous person harms himself as well as others. If he succeeds in preventing the prosperity of others, he has obstructed the advancement and progress of society and will receive a portion of this loss himself. If he fails, he will destroy himself with fret and harm others.
