Because one’s conscience is the manifestation of the spirit, the spirit is happy when one carries out a good deed. Consequently, when his spirit is happy, God is also happy and satisfied. On the other hand, when one makes someone unhappy, his conscience will be disturbed, and God will be unhappy with him. This notion is the fundamental characteristic of manifestation of the conscience in a human being. Whoever does good deeds will have a happy conscience, and whenever one invokes harm on others, his conscience will become weary of the reason why he did such. The more he harms, the more his conscience will discomfort him. Conversely, the grander his good deed, the higher the satisfaction and joy of his conscience.
The physiological effect of a troubled conscience on the body is that it damages all movements of the body. Furthermore, since this unhappiness starts in the brain, its reflection reaches all parts of the body. This reaction reaches the eyes, the ears, the nose, the heart, and all organs and puts pressure on all cells of the body and hurts them, which is, in fact, self-harm.
